Will my insurance cover damage to my device?

It depends on your coverage. Whether it’s a phone, laptop or tablet. These are the most common insurance policies and what they cover:

Contents all risk

Covers accidental damage to your device at home. Think of a fallen phone, broken laptop screen or tablet that gets wet. Check your policy for deductible and maximum amount.

Mostly covered

Contents outdoors

Additional coverage on top of your contents, for damage to items outside your home. There is often a maximum amount. What is covered under electronics varies by policy, so check your policy schedule.

Contents basic

Covers only fire, burglary and leaks. It does not cover a dropped phone, broken laptop or water damage caused by rain. Devices due to your own fault are not covered.

Not covered

Travel Insurance

Covers damage to your device while traveling, through baggage coverage. There is often a deductible and a maximum amount for electronics. Damage at home is not covered.

Check your policy

Liability (AVP).

Covers damage you accidentally cause to someone else’s device. Think of a friend’s laptop or a colleague’s phone. Your own damage is not covered.

Only damage to others

Gadget Insurance

Separate insurance specifically for your devices. Covers damage, water damage and theft of your devices. Premium and deductible vary by provider.

What is typically covered and not covered?

Regardless of the insurer, these rules of thumb apply:

Typically reimbursed

Broken screen due to fall damage
Accidental water damage
Self-inflicted damage (all-risk).
Damage outside the home (outdoor coverage).
Theft from your home (in case of burglary)

Usually not reimbursed

Wear and tear or aging (such as a declining battery)
Claims that existed prior to the policy
Intentionally caused damage
Loss or loss (unless specifically covered)
Software problems or factory errors

    Often it does, but not always. All-risk home contents insurance with out-of-home coverage or separate gadget insurance usually pays for screen damage. Basic contents insurance usually does not. Check your policy sheet under “electronics” or “valuables,” or contact your insurer.
