Possible solution: hard reset or factory reset

In some cases, you can fix your problem with a hard reset: a hard reset allows you to restart the phone without losing data. Per phone, the reset method varies.

  • For Samsung models, you perform this as follows: You need to press and hold two buttons simultaneously for 10 seconds. These are: the power button and volume down (-) button.
  • For the iPhone, perform this as follows:
    • iPhone 4 through iPhone 6S and iPads: press and hold the home and lock buttons simultaneously for 15 seconds until the Apple logo becomes visible.
    • iPhone 7/ 7 Plus: Press and hold the lock and volume down buttons simultaneously for 15 seconds until the Apple logo becomes visible.
    • iPhone 8 and all models without a home button: briefly press the volume up button. Press the volume down button briefly. Then press and hold the lock button until the Apple logo is visible.
  • For other brands, you will have to look up the user manual to find out how to do a hard reset.

Unfortunately, the hard reset does not always work and you are sometimes forced to perform a factory reset. Please note that this will cause you to lose all data! That’s why it’s always smart to back up your phone. On a Samsung, you can do this through a key combination to perform the hard reset. To perform a hard reset, hold down the following key combinations while booting the device:

Turn off your phone, press and hold the power key and volume up key, then press and hold the power key. Release the keys when the Android mascot appears. When the Android system restore menu appears, use the volume down key to select “Wipe Data / Factory Reset” and press the Power key to continue. Select “Yes” and proceed again. Select “Restart system now” if factory settings are restored.
