iPad keeps shutting down? This could be going on!
Does your iPad keep shutting down with full battery? Very annoying! You finally make it through that difficult Candy Crush level and suddenly your iPad fails, even though you don’t have a charger with you because you were convinced your battery would last a day. In this blog, we explain what might be causing this and what you can do yourself to make sure your iPad is working normally again. Here, we address the following points.
In this blog, we discuss:
- Software problems (hard reset or software recovery)
- iPad battery needs replacement
- Your iPad has sustained water damage
- iPad keeps shutting down and restarting
- iPad keeps shutting down due to cold
- iPad battery percentage does not add up
- iPad breaks down while charging
- Hardware or motherboard problems
- Overheating and heavy apps
Software problems
When your iPad fails with a full battery, there is a good chance that the iPad is suffering from a software problem. For example, your iPad thinks the battery percentage is 20% when in reality the battery is empty. You can first try a hard reset yourself in this case. You do this as follows:
- iPads with home button: Press and hold the lock and home button simultaneously for 15 seconds until the Apple logo becomes visible.
- iPads without a home button: Briefly press the volume up button. Press the volume down button briefly. Then press and hold the lock button until the Apple logo is visible.
You may also find that your iPad keeps shutting down when using certain apps. In that case, it is important to close the relevant apps first. If this did not help, you can reinstall the app in question. If both steps did not help, the last thing you can try is a software recovery. You can visit one of our branches for a software repair, but you can also do it yourself. Want to know how? Read in the blog on software recovery how to do this yourself. CAUTION Always backup your iPad first so you don’t lose your data.
iPad battery needs replacement
Your iPad failed while the battery was still full. Now you try to restart it and suddenly the iPad says empty? Then chances are the problem is caused by your battery. To find out if your battery is the culprit, you can always stop by for a free diagnosis. Does the diagnosis show that your battery is the cause of your iPad’s failure? Then you are forced to have a battery replacement done. Check out our iPad battery repairs here.
Your iPad has sustained water damage
Have you dropped your iPad in water recently? Swimming with your iPad is never a good idea. Water inside the iPad causes a short circuit and this can be the reason why the iPad screen keeps failing. Do you have water damage? Then come in for water damage treatment as soon as possible; the longer water sits in your iPad, the more damage it can do internally.
iPad keeps shutting down and restarting
If your iPad gets stuck on the Apple logo, this is called a bootloop. Unfortunately, you cannot fix a bootloop yourself and for this you have to go to a repairman. At ThePhoneLab, we always perform a free diagnostic first. After determining the problem, you can choose to move on to a repair.
Does your iPad have a smartcover? This is a case for your iPad that you can open and close. This also automatically locks the iPad because it contains a magnet. When you have it fully opened to the back, the magnet can sit against the back of the iPad. This can cause the iPad screen to turn on and off all the time. This is then caused by the case and not the iPad. This can also happen when the cover is worn or old. You solve this problem very easily yourself by turning off the smartcover. You do this as follows:
- Go to Settings
- Go to General
- Disable the lock/unlock option
iPad keeps shutting down due to cold
Do you take your iPad outside often? And does your iPad screen drop out all the time while it’s cold outside? This cold may be the culprit. Read more about this in our blog on what the cold does to your battery.
iPad battery percentage does not add up
Sometimes it seems like your iPad still has enough battery, but it still suddenly cuts out. This could be because the battery percentage is no longer displayed correctly. This happens especially with older batteries or after software updates. In this case, it may help to recalibrate the battery by fully discharging your iPad and then charging it to 100% without interruption. If the problem persists, the battery is often worn out and we recommend a battery replacement.
iPad breaks down while charging
Does your iPad drop out while on the charger? If so, it could be due to a faulty cable, adapter or charging port. Therefore, always use a reliable charger and have your device checked if the problem keeps recurring. Check out our charging port repairs here.
Hardware or motherboard problems
If none of the above solutions work, there may be a hardware problem. For example, a damaged chip, short circuit or drop damage. In this case, a professional diagnosis is necessary to determine which parts need to be replaced. Simply make an appointment for a free diagnosis.
Overheating and heavy apps
Are you using heavy apps such as games, video editing or multitasking? If so, your iPad may temporarily shut down to prevent heat damage. Let your iPad cool down and close heavy apps when this problem occurs more frequently.
Is the problem still unresolved? We then recommend that you visit a professional repair shop (for example, ThePhoneLab, check here for a branch near you). At ThePhoneLab, we always do a free diagnostic first. After this you are not obliged to move on to repair, but of course you can! Make your appointment here:

Why does my iPad suddenly shut down while the battery still seems full?
This often happens because the battery is worn out or the battery percentage is no longer displayed properly. In some cases, a software error or hardware problem may also be the cause. A diagnosis can quickly reveal what is going on.
