Battery drains faster due to cold
All batteries perform worse in the cold. Not only from smartphones, but also from electric cars, for example. When your iPhone has been around for a while, so the battery is worn out anyway, this is when you really get affected. So then your smartphone suddenly drops out at, say, 30% battery. Annoying! Fortunately, something can be done about this. For example, you can pay attention to it by keeping your iPhone in your pocket when you are outside. But ideally, of course, you scroll through your Spotify playlist while taking a stroll through Winter Wonderland. But then you have the problem of your battery draining faster due to the cold. That’s why we’re giving you some tips so you can get your iPhone out in the cold again in no time.
Apple states that the ideal operating temperature for an iPhone is between 0 and 35 degrees Celsius. At temperatures below that, the system can temporarily shut itself down to prevent battery damage.
Battery calibration
Your iPhone breaks down in cold weather and also unexpectedly. To avoid this, you can calibrate the battery. In a previous blog, we explained how to calibrate your iPhone battery. This little tructure will make sure your iPhone regains its overall capacity. This causes the smartphone to display the correct battery percentage. This reduces the chances of your iPhone failing in cold weather. Calibration is especially effective if the battery is not physically worn out, but software wise it does not sync properly with the battery percentage.

Turning on energy-saving mode
What you can also do is use your power saving mode. This makes your battery run down less quickly, so you can probably walk a little longer in the cold before it fails. You turn on power saving mode by:
- Go to Settings
- Go to Battery
- Go to Energy Saving Mode and turn on the feature by clicking the switch
In addition, you can temporarily disable Bluetooth, background activity and automatic downloads to further extend your battery life.

Why does my iPhone break down in the cold?
This is because batteries do not work as well in low temperatures. In cold conditions, the chemical reaction in the battery slows down, allowing your iPhone to provide less power.
-
Is it normal that my battery drains faster in winter?
Yes, this is normal. All lithium-ion batteries, including those in smartphones, perform worse at low temperatures. Once your device warms up again, the battery often works better again.
-
Why does my iPhone fail when there is 20% or 30% battery left?
This usually happens with older batteries. The battery then can no longer deliver the required power, especially in cold conditions. This causes the iPhone to turn itself off to prevent damage.
-
What can I do to better protect my battery from cold?
Keep your iPhone warm as much as possible, such as in your jacket pocket. Use power-saving mode and avoid prolonged use outside in the cold. A case can also help keep the temperature better. Learn more at
