Your iPhone keeps shutting down due to a software problem

If your iPhone keeps shutting down but your battery is not dead, it may be a software problem. For example, your battery thinks it has 20% left when, in reality, the battery is empty and thus has 0%. You can first try doing a hard reset yourself in this case. This is as follows:

  • iPhone 4 through iPhone 6S and iPads: press and hold the home and lock buttons simultaneously for 15 seconds until the Apple logo becomes visible.
  • iPhone 7/ 7 Plus: Press and hold the lock and volume down buttons simultaneously for 15 seconds until the Apple logo becomes visible.
  • iPhone 8 and newer: briefly press the volume up button. After this, briefly press the volume down button. After this, press and hold the lock button until the Apple logo becomes visible.

Does your iPhone keep dropping out when using certain apps? Then a software recovery may be the solution. For a software recovery you can visit our stores but you can also perform it yourself, read in our blog on software recovery how to do it yourself. Always backup your device first.

iPhone keeps shutting down and restarting

If your iPhone keeps getting stuck on the Apple logo and does not boot up, this is called a bootloop. Unfortunately, you usually cannot fix this yourself and for this you need to go to a professional repairman.

With an iPhone Xs or newer, you may also have a reboot problem where your iPhone keeps shutting down and rebooting after a few minutes. Usually this is after about 3 minutes.
This is due to a new feature that every iPhone starting with the Xs has: the self-test. Every few minutes, the iPhone itself checks the operation of all components. Among other things, it looks at the temperature sensors inside the iPhone. For example, if your iPhone suddenly sees a temperature that is very different from the previous reading or that is extremely high or low, it will restart to see if the problem is fixed. Does the problem persist? Then your phone continues to reboot every 3 minutes.

You can stop by ThePhoneLab to have this examined. Our specialists perform a free diagnosis to see what the problem is with your iPhone. In many cases, it can be solved with a charging port repair. This is the part where the temperature sensor fails most often.

iPhone breaks down due to cold

Does your iPhone screen keep failing and is it very cold outside? Then perhaps the cold is the culprit. Read more about this in our blog on what the cold does to your battery. Spoiler: You often solve this with a battery replacement.

Recent causes why your iPhone breaks down

In addition to the above causes, our specialists today see other reasons why iPhones fail unexpectedly:

  • Overheating: modern iPhones turn themselves off to prevent damage when the device gets too hot, such as during gaming, charging or use in direct sunlight.
  • Faulty sensors or components: newer iPhones continuously check to see if components are working properly. If abnormalities occur, the device may automatically reboot.
  • Damaged charging port or temperature sensor: this can cause reboot problems, especially in iPhones from the Xs onward.
  • Unstable iOS update or apps: after a major software update, the device may become temporarily unstable due to background processes.
  • Why does my iPhone suddenly shut down while the battery still seems full?

This is often due to a worn or improperly calibrated battery. The battery then transmits an incorrect percent value, making your iPhone think it still has enough energy when in reality it is empty. This is especially common on devices older than two years.

  • How do I know if my battery is the cause?
  • Why does my iPhone break down in the cold?
  • My iPhone got wet and is now falling out, what should I do?
  • When should I have my iPhone checked?
