Forcibly stopping a MacBook is the last resort when an app or your laptop itself crashes. On this page in our ThePhoneLab Knowledge Base, we explain how it is that your MacBook stops responding and how to safely get it running again. And by!

Why MacBook forced stop?

As rigorous as it sounds, sometimes forcibly stopping or forcibly closing your MacBook is the only solution to pick up where you left off. This is because it sometimes happens that a laptop crashes and becomes unresponsive, such as because of an application that is not working properly. You will notice this automatically – the keyboard and mouse no longer respond to anything and the spinning waiting cursor (also called beach ball, spinning wheel or rainbow wheel) also appears on the screen. To solve this, we have listed the steps you need to take for you.

How can I forcefully stop my MacBook?

Forcibly stopping a MacBook or an app on the Mac is the first and simplest step you take when your laptop stops responding or crashes.

  1. Choose the “Force Stop” option from the Apple menu or hold down this key combination: Option (⌥) + Command () + Escape.
  2. In the “Force stop” window that now opens, click on the app you want to close and click “Force stop.

The Mac should now work again. Is this not working out? Then try rebooting the MacBook via “Reboot” in the Apple menu. If this fails automatically, then try forcing it:

  1. Press and hold the power button for 10 seconds until the Apple logo appears. Your MacBook will now turn off.
  2. Restart the MacBook (if it doesn’t already do so by itself). You should now be able to pick up where you left off!

What if my MacBook is still unresponsive after being forced to stop?

Is your MacBook still not responding as usual after a forced shutdown? Keep in mind that external connections (for example, a mouse, a printer or a hard drive) can also cause malfunctions. Therefore, try plugging and unplugging these as well. It could also be that your MacBook is working slower than usual, due to age and/or excessive load. In the Knowledge base of ThePhoneLab we help you to reinstall your reinstall your MacBook or even restore it to factory settings.
