Smartphone battle: OnePlus 5T vs. Apple iPhone X

Are they
hot or not
? This fall, two tech companies came out with a new high-end smartphone. Whereas the latest model from the relatively young player on the market, OnePlus, went on sale just a week after its announcement in November, the latest model from tech giant Apple, the iPhone X is slowly trickling into the Netherlands. Time to put the two brand-new devices side by side.

Shame name 2017?

At least the two phones have one thing in common. They could both pass for the “clumsiest name of the year” award. The OnePlus 5T sounds more like the math formula on your first seventh-grade exam that you had so much trouble with. Apple conveniently jumped from the iPhone 8 to the iPhone X this fall, which you should also pronounce iPhone 10. This is to celebrate 10 years of the late Steve Jobs’ smartphones.

Sesame open you

Those were the words with which highwayman Ali Baba in the fairy tale opened a treasure chamber only to loot it. Unlocking the two smartphones fortunately requires more than just a one-liner. In fact, both phones can be opened by facial recognition. With this, the two manufacturers promise that no one but you can access the device.

Yet OnePlus has not yet dared to abandon the age-old technique of the fingerprint scanner, found on the back of the device. And that’s not surprising, because during the day the technology works seamlessly, in the dark the phone has more trouble recognizing your face.

Apple is so confident about the new, intelligent technology that the finger scan is a thing of the past. The iPhone then did make
a false start
and sees
no difference between identical twins
, but Apple’s technology seems promising. Apple impresses upon us that the chance of someone else opening your pocket computer is now 4 times less than with the fingerprint scanner.

Waterproof technology?

The smartphone has, with a tremendous bang, ousted the Donald Duck from the number one spot when it comes to WC pastimes. Not surprisingly, the vast majority of the current generation of phones are waterproof. But that’s where OnePlus missed the mark, because if you accidentally drop 5T into your glass of beer, it’s the end of the story. OnePlus boss Pete Lau believes too few consumers need a waterproof cell phone. Not surprising when you can just get a new device from the warehouse when your old one breaks down.

The iPhone X, on the other hand, can be dropped into the wading pool with confidence. If you let the device swim at depths greater than 3 meters, Apple cannot guarantee that it will survive and there is a chance that you will find it in a container of rice
to the repair shop.

Go home, button

Both the OnePlus 5T and the iPhone X have joined the “borderless screen association. Both phones said goodbye to the home button. That means a whole new user experience. At least, for the iPhone, where the many functions of the home button have been replaced by intuitive gestures. Because of this, it does take some time to get fully accustomed to the new controls.

OnePlus has taken a different approach. The physical button has been replaced by digital buttons at the bottom of the screen. Thus, the user experience remains about the same and it takes no time to get used to using your new smartphone.

The quality of the screens is very close. The iPhone’s updated OLED screen has a slightly higher resolution than the OnePlus’ AMOLED screen, but to the naked eye that difference is negligible.

Have a laugh!

Both devices received a major upgrade to the camera. We’ll leave the specs aside for now (that’s a lot of technical drivel) but the fact is that both the OnePlus 5T and the iPhone X allow you to take very professional photos with the portrait function. There’s no accounting for taste, so that’s why we’ll let you decide for yourself
Which device squeezes out the most beautiful pictures
.

Fast, faster, fastest

What is debatable, however, is speed. The iPhone features 3GB of Ram memory, which seems more than adequate for a mini-computer. In contrast, the OnePlus features an amazing 6 or 8GB of RAM memory (which many a PC can only dream of) and it pays off. Multiple tests indicate that the OnePlus 5T is a lot faster than the iPhone X. Like this test.

The price is right

As we have come to expect from Apple, every device they release requires a new mortgage to get it. With the iPhone X, they take it a step further, because to become a proud owner of the device, you not only need a second mortgage but you also have to sell a kidney. That’s because the model with 64GB memory will cost you €1159 – Do you take so many selfies that you need more memory? Then the 256GB device will cost you as much as €1329.

You can even buy multiple OnePlus 5Ts for those amounts, as the 64GB model costs €499 and for dual storage you pay €559.
