Everything you need to know about software updates for your iPad
A well-maintained iPad runs faster, is safer and lasts longer. And, of course, that includes regular software updates. But what if your iPad won’t update anymore? No worries. This blog from ThePhoneLab tells you exactly how to update your iPad and what to do if an update fails.
Why iPad updates are important
Software updates contain all kinds of improvements that make your iPad faster, more stable and more secure. Consider:
- Security: new updates include security patches against viruses and hackers.
- New features: from additional multitasking capabilities to handy widgets.
- Bug fixes: updates fix bugs or crashes from previous versions.
In short: regular updating prevents irritation and risk.
Here’s how to update your iPad in 5 easy steps
- Connect with wifi: use a stable and secure network.
- Connect your iPad to the charger: this will prevent your iPad from shutting down during the update.
- Go to Settings: open Settings > General.
- Go to “Software Update”: your iPad will now automatically search for updates.
- Tap “Download and install”: follow the on-screen instructions and wait quietly.
iPad won’t update – here’s what you can do
Sometimes you get an error message or the update doesn’t seem to start at all. In that case, always check these basic tips first:
- Check your wifi: without stable internet, an update won’t work anyway.
- Check the storage space: go to Settings > General > iPad storage and delete some apps or photos if necessary.
- Reboot your iPad: simply turning it off and on can solve many problems.
- Check your battery: make sure it is at least 50% or hang your iPad on the charger.
Still no success? Here are more advanced solutions
1. Does your iPad still support updates?
Some older models such as iPad mini 2 or Air 1 are no longer supported. Go to Settings > General > Info > Software Version and check through Apple’s official site to see if your model is still receiving iOS updates. If your iPad indicates that it is “up to date,” but you know a newer version exists, then your iPad is probably running on the highest version it can handle.
2. Can’t your iPad reach the update server?
Sometimes updating fails even though you are connected to wifi. Then there may be a problem with the connection to the update server. Try this:
- Disconnect the wifi and reconnect
- Use another network if necessary
- Doesn’t that help? Then connect your iPad to your computer or Mac and use iTunes or Finder to perform the update manually
3. Delete update and download again
Sometimes something is wrong in the first attempt at downloading. In that case, try this:
- Go to Settings > General > iPad storage
- Search the list for the iOS update and uninstall it
- Then go back to Software Update and try downloading again
4. Factory reset (last option only).
If really nothing works, you can completely reset your iPad. This will erase all your content and settings, so don’t forget to back up via iCloud or your computer first!
- Go to Settings > General > Reset > Clear all content and settings
iPad is too old to update – now what?
Do you see “iPad is up-to-date” when there is actually a newer version? Then you probably have a model that no longer supports the latest iPadOS versions. The good news: we’re happy to help you determine if your iPad can last a few more years – or if it’s time for an upgrade.
