Every year around this time, it’s the same ritual: Google unleashes its latest Pixel lineup on the world, and you wonder if your old phone can last another year. This time is no different. Google has officially announced the Google Pixel 11 series and the Pixel Watch 5, featuring a few standout new features and at least one feature that’s drawing mixed initial reactions. We’ve broken it all down for you, including what it means if you’re torn between buying a new one or getting your old one repaired.
In this blog, we discuss:
- What exactly did Google announce?
- What is the new HiLight feature, and does it work well?
- What can the new Pixel Watch 5 do?
- What’s changing with Android 17 QPR2?
- Should you buy a new Pixel or get your current device repaired?
What exactly did Google announce?
On August 12, Google unveiled the entire Pixel 11 series and the Pixel Watch 5, along with a new accessory called the Pixel Tag, a small tracker to help you find your keys or bag. According to AndroidWorld, the lineup is available for immediate order, including a launch discount. Notably, 9to5Google also reported seeing ads for a mysterious tracker with a screen that turns out not to be the Pixel Watch 5 or a Fitbit device, so Google apparently still has something up its sleeve.
The phones themselves won’t see any major leaps forward, androidworld concludes: “A HiLight, but no major highlights.” That may sound a bit disappointing, but it mainly means that Google is opting for refinement rather than revolution this year. Improved camera software, a faster chip, and minor design tweaks are the main focus.
What is the new HiLight feature, and does it work well?
HiLight is a new feature on the Pixel 11 Pro that makes certain elements on your screen light up or stand out more intelligently—such as important notifications or pieces of text. The idea is appealing, but its implementation has drawn criticism. 9to5google calls it “another half-baked feature burdened by bad first impressions”—in other words, a feature that doesn’t feel polished yet and leaves a mediocre first impression.
That’s not necessarily a disaster. Software features like these are often refined through updates after users and reviewers provide feedback. Here’s some good news: 9to5google tested that Face Unlock (unlocking with your face) on the Pixel 11 series works much better in low light than on previous generations. That’s an improvement you’ll notice in everyday use, for example, when you pick up your phone in the evening.
What can the new Pixel Watch 5 do?
The Pixel Watch 5 is Google’s latest smartwatch and stands out due to a striking sustainability story: androidworld reports that Google presents the watch as “found in the ocean,” a reference to recycled material in the casing. Furthermore, the watch combines the usual health sensors with an extended user experience thanks to software optimizations.
For those who already own a smartwatch: there won’t be any major breakthroughs this year, but the combination with the Pixel Tag and the rest of the Pixel ecosystem does make the whole package more appealing if you’re already a Pixel user. Especially if you regularly lose things, that tracker is a handy little extra.
What’s new in Android 17 QPR2?
Android 17 QPR2 is the quarterly update (Quarterly Platform Release) that Google releases alongside the major annual Android update, featuring smaller but noticeable improvements. For Pixel users, including those with older models, this update brings a handful of useful additions. 9to5google has listed the most important ones:
- App lock: You can lock individual apps with an additional PIN or fingerprint.
- System blur on the lock screen: a subtle visual blur, similar to what you see on iOS.
- Customizable Quick Settings: You have more control over how your Quick Settings menu looks.
- Extended Dynamic Color theming: Your phone adapts colors even more extensively to your wallpaper.
The great thing about this update is that you’ll get it even if you don’t buy a Pixel 11. If you have an older Pixel, you’ll simply benefit from it as soon as the update rolls out.
Buy a new Pixel or have your current device repaired?
Buying a new Pixel 11 is nice, but not always necessary. A cracked screen or a battery that only lasts half a day can often be fixed faster and cheaper with a repair than with a completely new device. Our own repair data shows that screen repairs accounted for about 59 percent of our repairs in the past year, followed by battery replacements at 18 percent: precisely the two issues that often make people reach for a new phone when there is another way.
ThePhoneLab is an Independent Repair Provider for Google, among others, which means we use original parts and offer a lifetime warranty on repairs. If you’re unsure about your screen, check out your options under ” Google Pixel Screen Repair.”
Our specialist, Wouter, who has been performing repairs since 2016, has noticed that many customers don’t realize how many more years a device had left in it until after it’s been repaired. A new battery or screen can easily give your phone years of extra life, without you having to buy a new device.
