iPad no longer responds to touch
The iPad crashes and does nothing, a super irritating problem. The screen is on and the buttons still work but it does not respond to touch. When it crashes, it is also not possible to turn it off in the normal way. Then try forcibly rebooting it. Your data will not be erased on a forced reboot so a backup is not necessary. Follow these steps to perform a hard reset:
- Models without a home button: briefly press the volume up button. Press the volume down button briefly. Then press and hold the power button until the iPad reboots.
- Models with home button: press and hold the home button and the top button (or side button) at the same time until you see the Apple logo.

iPad screen black, but sound or vibration
You hear notifications coming in, feel your iPad vibrating, but you see nothing. Don’t panic. This usually indicates a faulty connection between the motherboard and the display or damage to the display itself. Sometimes a hard hit or fall can disconnect the display connector without you noticing it right away.
What you can do: first disconnect all accessories and charge your iPad with an original charger for at least half an hour. Doesn’t that help? Then try a forced reboot. Does the screen stay black even though you hear sound? Then there’s probably nothing left but to have the screen replaced. Fortunately, our specialists at ThePhoneLab can help you with this quickly and safely.
What do you do when your iPad crashes?
If your iPad suddenly becomes unresponsive or hangs, it is often the result of a stuck app or a temporary software error. In most cases, you can bring it back to life by turning off the screen and restarting the device.
Can’t do that? If so, check that your iPad has enough storage space and that an iOS update is ready under Settings -> General -> Software Update. Outdated software can cause your iPad to be less stable.
Why does my iPad get stuck?
Your iPad can get stuck for a variety of reasons: think too little free storage, too many apps running in the background or an app that is not functioning properly.
It often helps to regularly clean up your iPad: remove apps you don’t use, free up large files such as videos or downloads, and always install the latest updates. Notice that the same app keeps crashing? Uninstall it and reinstall it from the App Store. For more tips, read; iPad keeps dropping out? This could be going on!
What to do if the iPad locks up?
An iPad that stops responding at all sometimes needs a push. You can try turning it off normally and restarting it. If that doesn’t work, you can connect it to a computer via a cable.
Use iTunes (or Finder on a Mac) to restore the iPad. This puts the software back on your device and often fixes deeper software problems. Note that a restore can erase your data, so if possible, back it up first.

What should you do if your iPad screen stops rotating?
If your iPad stops rotating when you tilt it, the rotation lock is probably on. Here’s how you check this:
- Open the Control Panel by swiping down from the top right corner.
- Look for the icon of a lock with a circle around it.
- Is that on? Tap it to turn it off.
Doesn’t this help? Then close all apps and restart the iPad to allow the motion sensors to recalibrate.
How do I get my iPad working again?
If your iPad seems “dead,” start simple:
- Connect it to the charger and let it charge properly.
- After that, try turning it on normally.
- If it sticks or doesn’t boot up, connect it to your computer and restore the iPad via iTunes or Finder.

What to do if the iPad screen is unresponsive?
When your screen stops responding to touch, it could be due to dirt, a bad screen protector or a defect in the screen itself.
Carefully remove your screen protector (if you have one) and clean the screen with a soft, dry microfiber cloth.
Then, if your screen is still not responding, try restarting your iPad.
Does the problem persist? Then there is probably damage to the digitizer (the touch layer of the screen) and the screen should be professionally checked.
Why is my iPad screen black (no vibrations or sound)?
A black screen doesn’t necessarily mean your iPad is broken right away. Sometimes the battery is completely dead, or there is a software error that prevents the screen from lighting up.
Always charge your iPad properly first. No response? Then it could be a detached LCD or OLED screen or a problem on the motherboard. In that case, have your device checked by one of ThePhoneLab’s specialists to prevent worse. To do so, make an appointment at one of our branches as soon as possible.
