Updating MacBook
Regularly updating your MacBook is important for several reasons. When a laptop is up-to-date, it uses the latest security systemprotecting your MacBook Air or Pro from viruses/malware (short for malicious software, malicious software). In addition, an update may bring new features, often improving compatibility (the cooperation between applications and software/hardware, such as an iPhone working together with a MacBook). Consider continuity features such as Handoff or Universal Control, which make it very easy to work across multiple Apple devices. Often, an update also acts as a fresh start for your laptop, making it work just a bit faster than before.
Disadvantages updates MacBook
Updating an (old) MacBook can also bring disadvantages. For example, some apps may be so outdated that you can no longer use them after an update. The opposite is also possible. In this case, the latest software is so advanced that your old MacBook has no space or storage for it and can no longer process it, or finds it harder to do so. This often leads to slower performance as the processor (CPU) struggles to process everything. As a result, the laptop becomes overheated, causing the fan has to work overtime. And as if a slow Mac wasn’t irritating enough, it can also cause a lot of noise. Fortunately, Apple has come up with something for old MacBooks – security updates for older systems. Whether your MacBook is still receiving security updates can be found on Apple’s site.
MacOS update
Apple automatically lets you know about software updates to MacOS, Apple’s operating system. You get notifications of this in Apple’s Notification Center, after which you can perform or schedule the update right away. You can also perform updates yourself through Apple’s menu > “System Settings” > “General” > “Software Update.
MacOS update setup
Updates can also be set to happen automatically. Again, you do this through the Apple menu, at “System Settings” > “General” > “Software Update” > “Automatic Updates. Here you can choose to automatically download and install available updates, updates to macOS, updates to apps from the App Store, and system files and security measures as soon as they become available. ThePhoneLab’s specialists recommend that you set only the security updates automatically; the larger macOS upgrades are better installed manually. Then you can take your time with it, and also check carefully whether the update in question is really an upgrade for your model of Mac. Note that updates can be installed only when your MacBook’s charger is connected to electricity.
