Are you wondering why your iPad storage is suddenly full when you hardly have any apps or photos? Chances are, system data is the culprit. In this blog, we explain exactly what these “invisible space eaters” are and how to safely clear them out.

At ThePhoneLab, we get this question almost daily. Fortunately, there is often something you can do about it!

In this blog you will read:

What is system data on your iPad?

System data are all the temporary or permanent files that iPadOS needs to function properly. Examples include:

  • Cache files of apps and updates
  • Logs and crash data
  • Language packs, translation files and Siri voices

They are necessary but they can also take up considerable space.

Where do you see the system data on your iPad?

You can find them via:

Settings > General > iPad storage

Scroll down until you see “System Data. The corresponding gray bar in the storage bar shows how much space they take up. In some cases, this can amount to several gigabytes!

Why does your iPad use so much system space?

Apple uses system data as a kind of backup storage. The operating system knows it needs certain files – but also knows it can delete some once your iPad runs out of space.

However, sometimes that storage gets stuck and you get unnecessary delays or error messages. That’s when it’s time to take action.

Can you delete system data?

You can’t delete system data one-to-one like an app. But you can use clever tricks to free up this space:

  • Restart your iPad: a simple restart already removes some of the temporary files
  • Forced reboot: hold volume up and then volume down briefly, then hold the power button until the Apple logo appears
  • Empty cache: clear Safari data or delete and reinstall heavy apps
  • Major cleaning? Consider a factory reset (always back up to iCloud!)
