Phone audio not working? Or your sound is really soft? A defective speaker causes many problems. For example, you can’t hear it when you get an important call or you can’t hear the person on the other end of the line. To solve this there are a few steps you can follow. In this blog we explain step by step what you can do about this problem. We will address the following points:

  • Your sound is muted: no ringtone or notification sound
  • Phone audio not working because ‘do not disturb’ is on
  • Phone audio not working during calls
  • Phone audio doesn’t work in the car
  • Audio only works with earphones
  • Phone speaker replacement

Your sound is muted: no ringtone or notification sound

Muting your phone is a simple operation. This action may differ per device. If you have an iPhone you can read the following blog: iPhone audio not working. If you are using an Android device, you can generally find the mute setting in the settings of your phone. Under the sound mode button you will find the options sound, vibrate and mute. Not only in settings but also in the notification screen you can quickly switch between sound, vibrate and silent.

Phone audio not working because ‘do not disturb’ is on

When the phone is on do not disturb, you mute all notifications. This means that you mute the sound, vibrate and the visual notifications. In the following steps we explain how to enable the do not disturb function on an Android device:

  1. Go to Settings
  2. Go to Sound
  3. Go to Do Not Disturb and click Enable Now

If you have completed these steps, you now know how to set your phone to do not disturb. With an iPhone you do this in a different way. If you want to know how to do this, read the following blog: iPhone audio not working

Phone audio not working during calls

Do you hear almost no sound while calling? Or do you hear nothing at all? Then there are three options:

  1. The sound of your phone is too soft. To increase or decrease the volume on your phone, use the volume buttons on the side.
  2. Is your audio at its loudest? But is it still not working or do you hear the sound softly? Chances are your speaker is full of dirt. You can remove the dirt from the speaker yourself, but make sure that you work carefully and do not damage the speaker. We recommend that you have this done by a specialist so that you are sure that your speaker is not damaged. At ThePhoneLab we give your smartphone a free check-up and we thoroughly clean your phone so that your loudspeaker is functioning properly again in no time.
  3. The cleaning didn’t help either? Then your speaker probably needs to be replaced. Visit one of our stores to have a free diagnosis by one of our specialists.

Phone audio doesn’t work in the car

Your phone audio doesn’t work in the car? Super annoying, that means you can’t play the new hits of your favorite artist in the car. First of all, check whether your phone is connected to the car with a USB cable or bluetooth. Is the phone connected but the audio is still not working? Then try to connect the phone via the other option. If this also doesn’t work, it is useful to remove the phone from the bluetooth list and connect it again. Since you cannot adjust the sound of your phone in many cars with the volume knob of the car itself, it is good to check and do this manually. Still no audio? All cars have a step-by-step manual on how to connect the phone to the car. Go through these steps one by one to make sure everything went well.

Audio only works with earphones

Very annoying: your audio only works with earphones. It may happen that your phone thinks it has earphones in it. You can easily test this by pushing the volume knob up or down. As soon as you do this, the headphone symbol will appear on the screen. In most cases this is due to dirt in the headphone jack. The dirt makes your phone think it has headphones in it. You can easily remove the dirt, you do this with a thin, unsharp object, such as tweezers. Be careful! By violently removing the dirt you can damage the connection. Still the same problem? Your sound phone only works with earphones? You probably have an internal problem. Because this is not immediately solvable, we recommend that you go to a specialist. At ThePhoneLab we do a free diagnosis to find out why your sound is no longer functioning.

Phone speaker replacement

Your phone’s audio still doesn’t work? Then one of the speakers probably needs to be replaced.

If you want to have one of the speakers replaced, it is important that you go to a professional repairer (for example ThePhoneLab – look here for a location near you). At ThePhoneLab we do a diagnosis to find out why the sound no longer works. A diagnosis is always free. After this you are not obliged to proceed to repair, but of course you can!
