Is your MacBook keyboard not working or not working as it should? Or can’t use one or more keys? Fortunately, there are some things you can try before you throw the device out the window. The specialists at ThePhoneLab will tell you what you can do on this page.

MacBook keyboard problems

If one, several or all of the keys on your MacBook’s built-in keyboard stop working, there could be several causes. These causes and problems can occur on both a MacBook Air and a MacBook Pro.

– Sometimes keys on the keyboard get stuck because of accumulated dust or dirt under the keys. Do not immediately try to pry off the affected keys, but clean the entire keyboard first. Our specialists explain on this page out how best to go about it.

– A logical cause of a non-working keyboard is physical damage. Did you drop your laptop, is there water damage or did your laptop hit something? Check carefully what might have happened. The solution is a repair, which you can read more about later on this page.

– Your laptop’s battery is often located under the keyboard. Therefore, if something is wrong with the battery, it can also affect your keyboard. For example, when the battery is swollen. In that case, turn off your laptop immediately and come by as soon as possible in one of our stores. This is because a bulging battery can leak or even explode.

– When your MacBook’s battery is low, you normally get a notification. In some cases, this warning is not visible. By plugging it in, you’ll notice soon enough if this is the cause of a non-working keyboard.

– Some keys work with a delay. Consider the Caps Lock key, which you often accidentally press without intending to use. So wait patiently before calling in helpers like ThePhoneLab;)

– In the Apple menu, you can set how you prefer to use the keyboard. If the keyboard does not work or is unresponsive one time, the settings may have been accidentally changed. Check this in the Apple menu at > System Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard > Key Delay. Is this delay enabled? If so, that explains why keys take longer to take effect. Also, the keyboard layout may have been accidentally turned on incorrectly. Again, you can check this in the Apple menu, via > System Settings > Keyboard > Text input > Edit > Show input menu in menu bar > Input menu.

– Software can also be a culprit for the keyboard, such as after an update or installation of new software. Again, go to the System Preferences in the Apple menu (see above) and check that everything is set the way you want it.

MacBook loose keyboard does not work

All laptops have a built-in keyboard. Of course, you may find it more comfortable or ergonomic to work with an external keyboard, which you connect separately to your laptop. If this keyboard does not work and you have already checked the possible causes above, read the following tips:

  • Check that the connection is properly connected and/or reconnect the external connection.
  • Are you using a keyboard paired via bluetooth? Disconnect and reconnect.
  • The problem could also be with your MacBook itself. Therefore, try out the external keyboard on another laptop or computer. Is the problem with the laptop? Then you will have to repair the port/connection. Is the keyboard the problem? Then you will have to repair or replace it.
