Is cleaning your MacBook keyboard something you rarely do? Then read on quickly, because keyboards are on average often dirtier than a toilet seat(!). On this page, the specialists at ThePhoneLab will give you tips on how to best clean your keyboard.

Why clean MacBook keyboard?

We spend an enormous amount of time behind the laptop or computer. Therefore, it is not surprising that the screen, mouse and keyboard of your device are sometimes extremely dirty, often without you even realizing it. You transfer the dirt via your fingers, but lunch behind your laptop also creates a lot of bacteria on your keyboard. Not to mention dust swirling around the office… Eventually, dirt and dust can cause some keys or even the entire keyboard to stop working properly. So regular cleaning of your keyboard is unfortunately necessary.

How do I clean my MacBook keyboard?

There are several ways to clean your MacBook keyboard. If you do this regularly, then a superficial cleaning will suffice. We explain it to you step-by-step:

  1. Always turn off the appliance before cleaning, and unplug it.
  2. Flip your MacBook over in the air and try to gently shake out excess dust or by gently tapping on the back.
  3. Wet (preferably) a microfiber cloth with a few drops of clean water and rub the surface of the keyboard with it. Be careful not to use too much moisture, which can get under the keys and cause moisture damage.
  4. More stubborn stains can be removed with a slightly damp cotton swab.
  5. Wait until the keyboard is completely dry before using it again.

MacBook keyboard cleaning with compressed air

If the surface cleaning of the keyboard didn’t help, you can try cleaning your MacBook more thoroughly. For example, are any keys still stuck or not responding properly? Then purchase a can of compressed air to spray the keyboard clean.

  1. Test the airflow before using it.
  2. Tilt your MacBook and hold the spray tip about 1 centimeter away from the keyboard.
  3. Spray the air between the keys from left to right. Sometimes the spray can comes with a wand that you can use.
  4. Tilt your MacBook to the other corner and spray clean all the keys again. Do this again so you’ve had all sides.
