iPhone Setup: Turn off automatic screen brightness adjustment
We’ve all had moments when our iPhone’s automatic screen brightness adjustment drove us to madness. For example, you are outside in the sun and try to read your screen, but the brightness constantly changes and makes it difficult to see what is on the screen. But did you know there is a solution? In this blog, we’ll show you how to disable that irritating feature and regain control of your screen brightness.

Just as important to know: the steps below mainly turn off Provisioning attention detection, this may affect when your screen dims while you look at it. If you really want to turn off automatic brightness that reacts to ambient light, check the additional tip at the bottom as well.
Step 1: Go to your settings
Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
Step 2: Scroll to “Face ID and access code.
Once in your settings, scroll down and find the option called “Face ID and Access Code. Tap it to continue.
Step 3: Search ‘Facilities attention detection’
Now comes the important part. Under “Face ID and Access Code,” scroll down again until you see “Features Attention Detection. If this feature is enabled, your iPhone will try to detect if your attention is focused on the screen and can adjust screen behavior, such as dimming, accordingly.
Step 4: Turn off ‘Features attention detection’
It is time to end the irritation. Tap “Features attention detection” and disable this feature by flipping the switch to gray.
And that’s all! You now have attention detection disabled on your iPhone, which means that certain attention-based adjustments are no longer applied automatically. You have more control over how your screen behaves no matter where you are. Apple also describes this setting under “Face ID and passcode” under “Features attention detection.
Additional tip, really turn off automatic brightness
If your irritation is mainly due to the screen constantly getting brighter and darker due to ambient light, you’ll want to turn off the auto brightness setting:
- Go to Settings.
- Tap Accessibility.
- Tap Display and text size.
- Scroll all the way down and turn off Apply automatically.
