Do you almost always have a power bank with you because your iPhone drains quickly? This is a common and very annoying problem. In this blog, we will help you understand what causes this and how you can fix it. We discuss the following topics:

  • iPhone battery drains quickly
  • iPhone breaks down while battery is not dead
  • iPhone runs out of power without use
  • A particular app uses too much power
  • Battery dies quickly due to cold

iPhone battery drains quickly

You take your phone off the charger at 100%, you barely use it, and a few hours later it’s down to 10%? This often indicates battery wear, in which case a new battery is normally the only solution. It could also be the case that water damage or a defective component in the device causes a short circuit that causes the battery to drain quickly. To rule this out, stop by a professional smartphone repair company, such as ThePhoneLab. Our specialists can perform a free diagnosis to see which problem with your battery is the culprit.

You can also check the maximum capacity of your battery. You do this by going through the following steps:

  1. Go to Settings
  2. Go to Battery > Battery Condition
  3. See Maximum Capacity

If you want a battery that works at its maximum, this percentage should be as close to 100% as possible. If you want to be assured of this, we recommend replacing your iPhone battery after two years or if the capacity is less than 80%. In addition, it is important to always use an original Apple charger. Do not use a power bank or unofficial chargers as they can damage the battery. Also, prefer not to charge your iPhone in the car as this too can deteriorate the battery condition over time.

iPhone breaks down while battery is not dead

It sometimes happens that an iPhone fails at, say, 20%. You then think your battery was still 20% charged when in fact it is not: your iPhone shows an incorrect percentage. You can try calibrating the battery in this case so that the percentage becomes more accurate again. Follow these steps to calibrate your iPhone battery:

  1. Put your iPhone on an official Apple charger.
  2. Perform a hard reset until the Apple logo appears. In the text below, we explain how to perform a hard reset. The battery is now being calibrated.
  3. Charge the battery to 100%.
  4. When the battery is at 100%, leave the iPhone on the charger for another 60 to 90 minutes.

A hard reset is done as follows:

  • iPhone 4 through iPhone 6S and iPads: press and hold the home and lock buttons simultaneously for 15 seconds until the Apple logo becomes visible.
  • iPhone 7/ 7 Plus: Press and hold the lock and volume down buttons simultaneously for 15 seconds until the Apple logo becomes visible.
  • iPhone 8 and all models without a home button: briefly press the volume up button. Press the volume down button briefly. Then press and hold the lock button until the Apple logo becomes visible.

iPhone drains quickly without use

When an iPhone drains quickly without you using it, in some cases it indicates a short circuit. Short circuits in the phone may have been caused by water damage, for example, but this is not always the case. A short circuit drains your battery because it takes a lot of energy. Often the iPhone also gets hot in this case. To fix this annoying problem, the part that is short-circuited must be replaced. And when the short circuit is in the motherboard, it must be repaired. These types of repairs can be done at a professional repair shop.

A particular app uses too much power

If your iPhone’s battery drains quickly, it may be due to a particular app that consumes an unreasonable amount of power. This can be checked in the iPhone’s settings:

  1. Go to Settings
  2. Go to Battery

A list of how much power each app uses now appears on the screen. If there is an app among them that draws a lot of power, but which you hardly use, this could be the cause of the problem. To fix this, you can uninstall and reinstall the app.

Battery drains faster due to cold

Does your iPhone screen keep failing and is it very cold outside? If so, the cold might be the cause. Read more on this topic in our blog on what the cold is doing to your battery.
