What is the cache on your iPad?
The cache is a temporary storage area on your iPad. It stores data so that apps and websites can load faster. Think of images, Web pages or other content you view often.
Sounds convenient? It is – until the memory fills up. Then you notice that apps open slower, or the whole system feels sluggish. By emptying the cache, you give your iPad air again. Literally and figuratively.
Clear Safari cache
Do you use Safari a lot? Then this is the first place to clean up.
- Go to Settings > Safari
- Tap “Clear history and website data”
This deletes browsing history, cookies and other temporary data. The browser then feels fresh again like a newly installed app. Don’t see the option? Then there’s simply nothing to delete. Nice going!
Empty app cache on your iPad
Apps also store temporary data. And sometimes: a lot of data. You clear the app cache as follows:
- Go to Settings > General > iPad storage
- Wait for your iPad to run a scan
- See which apps use a lot of space
- Uninstall and reinstall the app if you want to clear the cache
Note that with some apps (such as Netflix or Spotify) you lose offline data such as downloads. But: you get speed in return.
