Nothing is as dirty as a MacBook screen full of fingerprints, dust and smudges. High time for a cleaning, then. But beware! Not all cleaners are suitable for cleaning screens or monitors. This page tells you exactly how to clean your screen. That way you, too, will soon have everything clear again.

Dirty MacBook screen

If you use your MacBook every day, the display will naturally get dirty. Just think of the fingerprints you leave behind when you open and close your laptop. And appearances are deceiving, because even though you may not use your MacBook very often, unnoticed spots and dust accumulate.

MacBook screen cleaning

Even though you may not be a cleaning hero, cleaning a display really requires some extra attention. They are precious, delicate utensils that can be easily damaged. For example, some MacBooks have a special coating that can be affected by certain ingredients in cleaning products (think scratches or stains). Therefore, to clean a screen or monitor, never use:

  • cleaning agents containing alcohol, acetone, ammonia, hydrogen peroxide or propylene glycol
  • cleaning wipes
  • all-purpose cleaner
  • window cleaner
  • solvents
  • abrasives
  • toilet or kitchen paper

What means do I use to clean my screen?

There are many cleaners made specifically to clean screens and monitors. While they are often effective, it’s fine to ignore them and save money. In fact, a microfiber cloth and water also work wonders. Never use too much water and always squeeze the cloth thoroughly to avoid moisture damage. Other lint-free cloths that absorb a lot of dust are also suitable, such as an eyeglass cloth.

Screen cleaning step-by-step

  1. Before you take care of your MacBook’s screen, check carefully to see what kind of screen you’re actually dealing with. You can find it in the factory data (in the user manual and/or on Apple’s website), sometimes even with separate cleaning instructions.
  2. Always turn off the appliance before cleaning, and unplug it.
  3. Wet (preferably) a microfiber cloth with a few drops of clean water and use it to rub the screen in circular motions. Do not wipe too hard on the screen. Be careful not to use too much moisture and always squeeze the cloth well before you start cleaning!
  4. Wait until the screen is completely dry before using it again.
