Forgot access code from your iPhone? Try this!
It never comes out when you forget your iPhone’s access code, and in this digital world, you already feel completely out of touch. We do so much on a phone these days that it can be quite a stressful situation when you can’t get your phone in. However, there are at least some options you have to get your device back up and running. In this article, we are going to discuss the following steps to regain access to your iPhone.
- Remembering forgotten access code
- The ‘Find My’ Way
- Using iTunes to reset your phone
- Through the ‘Recovery Mode’
Remembering forgotten access code
Since all data is safely hidden behind the access code, it is important to choose a code that only you can easily remember. Fortunately, should it happen that you forget the code, you have a few more attempts to try different codes before the device really locks up. Do handle these attempts carefully, as the “cooling off” period between attempts gets longer and longer. There is also a maximum number of attempts you can try, after which the device will lock completely and the only option is to wipe all data from the device and log back into your iCloud account to use the device again.
The ‘Find My’ Way
If you did enable the “Find My iPhone” feature before you forgot your iPhone’s passcode, you can use another device logged into the same Apple ID to wipe your device. PLEASE NOTE: So with this, all data goes from your device, therefore it is always important to have a backup of your data. You do this as follows:
- Log in via
iCloud.com
log in to the same Apple ID. - Using the menu, click on “Find My.
- On the left side, click on “Search Devices” under “All Devices,” or on your iPhone if it’s already listed.
- In the menu that appears, click on “Delete Device.
- Now the data and therefore the access code is off the device and you can put a backup back on the device.
Using iTunes to reset your phone
Fortunately, if the previous way fails, you can also restore the device via iTunes. Thus, all data will be deleted from the device via this route as well. You do this following these steps:
- Connect your iPhone via a cable to the computer you normally sync the device to.
- Open iTunes on your computer and select your iPhone.
- As long as you have connected your device to this computer before, you can often still make a backup copy. To do this, click ‘General’ and make the backup locally on your computer.
- If this is successful, you can restore your device to factory settings.
- Log back in with your Apple ID and restore the backup to your iPhone via iTunes.
Through the ‘Recovery Mode’
If restoring your iPhone via iTunes also fails, you can still try putting the device into “recovery mode. In this way, the operating system is first removed from the device and then reinstalled. Thus, the access code will also be gone, along with all the data stored on the device. So again, make sure you have a backup of your iPhone so that you can restore it after the event. Proceed as follows:
- Using a USB cable, connect your iPhone to a computer.
- Put your device in recovery mode.
- For iPhone 8 and newer:
- Briefly click the volume up button.
- Then briefly click the volume down button.
- Then press and hold the power button on the other side of the device.
- The screen will black out and then show the Apple logo. Still hold the button down.
- Once the recovery screen comes into view, you can release the power button.
- For iPhone 7 (Plus)
- Press and hold the volume down button and the power button.
- The screen will turn off and show nothing.
- Then release the power button, but hold down the volume down button.
- Then the recovery screen will pop up.
- For iPhone 8 and newer:
- For iPhone 6s or older:
- Press and hold the home button and the power button at the same time.
- The screen drops black, now release the power button.
- Keep holding down the home button, first the Apple logo will reappear and then the recovery screen. Then you can also release the home button.
- On your computer, open iTunes or the Finder.
- Click on your device and select “Restore.
- When the operating system installation is finished, the device will welcome you back with the “Hello” screen and you can get back to work.
