With the constant stream of innovations, it is reassuring to know that Apple continues to invest in the security of their devices. Here’s a handy tip to enable this security feature and protect your iPhone from theft:
Watch the video or scroll down for the written explanation:
Step 1: Make sure your iPhone is running iOS 26
Before we start setting up the extra security, it is important to make sure you have the latest software installed on your iPhone. Go to the “Settings” app, scroll down and tap “General,” select “Software Update” and follow the instructions to update your iPhone to iOS 26 or newer.
Step 2: Go to Settings
Once updated, open the “Settings” app on your iPhone. This is the control center for all adjustments to your device.
Step 3: Navigate to Face ID and access code
In Settings, search and tap “Face ID and access code. Here you will be asked to enter your current access code to access security settings.
Step 4: Turn on “Protection for Stolen Device,” or check if it’s already on
Scroll down on the Face ID and passcode page and you will find the option, “Protection for Stolen Device. Enable this option by tapping on it, or check if it’s already turned on. In iOS 26.4, many iPhones may already have this turned on by default, but it’s smart to check.
Congratulations! You’ve just added another layer of protection to your iPhone. From now on, a thief will not only have to crack your passcode, but will also have to bypass Face ID or Touch ID to access your personal data, and for sensitive actions, there is no passcode as an alternative. This security feature is particularly useful in situations where your iPhone is stolen. It adds an additional obstacle to unauthorized access, making your data safer even if your device falls into the wrong hands.
Make sure you regularly update your software to take advantage of the latest security features offered by Apple. With iOS 26, you’re one step closer to a worry-free smartphone experience, knowing that your personal information is safe, even in unexpected circumstances.
Extra tip: ‘Security delay’, known locations and why it works so well
“Stolen Device Protection” works extra strictly if your iPhone is not in a known location, such as home or work. In that case, sensitive changes, such as changing your Apple Account password, adjusting your passcode, disabling Find My, or actions around saved passwords, can only be done with Face ID or Touch ID, and some actions also follow a “Security Delay,” first a successful Face ID or Touch ID, then a wait, then Face ID or Touch ID again.
If you want maximum security, then in the same menu you can often choose that the security delay apply “Always,” that is, even in known locations. This is slightly less convenient, but the most secure.
Note that for known locations, your iPhone uses “Significant Locations. You’ll find this through Settings, Privacy and Security, Location Features, System Services, Significant Locations. If this is off, or if your iPhone doesn’t recognize your locations properly, the security delay may come into view more often than you expect, including in a store or while traveling.
