Pixel 6a update or overheating? You choose!
Do you have a Google Pixel 6a in your pocket or on your nightstand? Then it’s high time to pay attention to something you’d rather not have on your morning schedule: fire hazards. That’s because Google is pushing a mandatory software update for some of its Pixel 6a devices. And yes, “mandatory” sounds strict, but trust us: this is one you don’t want to skip. What’s going on? The battery in some devices appears to become less stable after a certain number of charges. We’re not talking about a small dip in battery life, but really serious stuff like swelling, overheating and in rare cases, even smoking. You’d rather not have that next to your pillow!

Why do I need to update my Pixel 6a?
Google is actively addressing this problem with a software update that will automatically run as soon as your device falls into the risk group. So expect a notification as soon as your device heads toward 375 charge cycles, a clear heads up that it’s time to act. Once you reach 400, the update will start doing its job.

The update deliberately lowers your battery capacity and limits the charging rate. Not to be bland, but purely to keep your device safe. And yes, you may find yourself hanging on the charger just a little more often as a result. But rather that than waking up with a device giving off smoke. It’s good to know that not every Pixel 6a is affected. Google knows exactly which devices are at risk and sends out targeted notifications. So if you don’t see a notification, you can breathe for now, but staying alert is always smart.
My Google Pixel is getting hot. Now what?
Fortunately, the chances of your Pixel 6a suddenly turning into a hand-held stove are small. But small does not mean zero. That’s why it’s important to remain vigilant.
Does your device feel warm while charging? Does the screen come loose or does the back bulge? Do you notice strange smells or see your device puffing like a steam cooker? Then it’s not a matter of “just watching” but of taking immediate action. Make an appointment immediately, And don’t keep walking around with it! ThePhoneLab is independent repair provider from Google! this means we use genuine Pixel parts.
Note: A new feature called Battery Health Assistant. This will make it easier to see how healthy your battery still is and when it’s time for maintenance or replacement. Well…. almost then, Androids battery health assistant does not measure the exact state of your phone. It makes an estimate based on how many charge cycles you’ve done, and that’s certainly not foolproof proof of whether your battery needs replacement. For example, iOS uses a hardware component that actually looks at the real state of the battery, not wet finger work. Until then? Just get it checked by us, and you’ll definitely know where you stand.
