Even before your iPad is permanently locked and you can no longer use it, you will see the message “iPad not available” and “you must wait X minute/minutes. This way, Apple gives you a number of chances to still access your iPad. For example, you have to wait one minute if you entered an incorrect password 5 times, 5 minutes if you entered an incorrect PIN 6 times and after 10 incorrect attempts, the iPad is permanently locked and you have to restore it via a computer or using iCloud. iPad unavailable due to software/hardware problem

Software or hardware problems can also cause your iPad to be temporarily unavailable. In the case of a software problem, you can reboot the iPad. The second option you can choose when the iPad is not available appears at the bottom left: “Emergency. This allows you to still call 112 or another emergency number even if you don’t have access to the iPad for a while. Note that this only applies to iPads that have a SIM or eSIM card.
