We can do almost anything with our smartphone today, so you can imagine how important the data on it is! To avoid losing your precious data, the only way is to take preventive measures in advance. Backing up your iPhone or Android phone can save you a lot of heartache, and in this blog we will show you how to back up your iPhone or Android phone with the most efficient methods.

We discuss:

Backing up your iPhone

Backing up with iCloud

iCloud is very simple and easy to use to back up your iOS device. Every registered iOS user gets 5 GB of free storage on iCloud, and you can back up your iPhone whenever you want with just a few clicks! You can also have your iPhone backed up automatically so you don’t forget. Want to know how? Then follow these steps:

  1. Make sure your iPhone is connected to a WiFi network.
  2. Then go to “Settings” and click on your account (at the top of the screen)
  3. Now scroll down to find the “iCloud backup” option, and enable it.

If you have an Apple Watch paired with your iPhone, it is also automatically backed up via iCloud when your iPhone backs up.

To prevent the backup from being interrupted, the backup will only run automatically when the iPhone is on the charger, has a Wi-Fi connection and is locked.

Even more storage space!

Just make sure your iCloud has enough free space to backup. The free 5 GB of storage you get from Apple fills up quickly. And is therefore not enough to back up your entire 64 GB, 128 GB or 256 GB iPhone. That’s why Apple gives you the choice to expand your storage. You can buy 50 GB for $0.99 p/m, 200 GB for $2.99 p/m and 2 TB for $9.99 p/m to make sure all your data is stored safely. Super convenient: the 200 GB and 2 TB subscriptions can be shared with family so everyone connected to your Apple family account can benefit!

Backing up with iTunes or Finder

With iTunes, you can back up your smartphone using your own computer. This still works on Windows and older Mac computers. On modern Macs running macOS Catalina or newer, the backup is done through Finder.

  1. Connect your iPhone to your computer with a USB cable.
  2. Your iPhone now displays a message asking if you want to trust this computer, tap “Trust.
  3. Open Finder on Mac or iTunes on Windows.
  4. Select your iPhone from the menu.
  5. Find the “Backups” option and choose “Back up on this computer.

Backing up your Android smartphone

Use your Google account

When you first set up your Android device, you most likely signed in to your Google account. With this account, Google automatically backs up much of your data including your passwords and Wi-Fi settings including details of your Android settings and display preferences. In addition to Google Drive, many manufacturers like Samsung use their own backup services, such as Samsung Cloud and Smart Switch. These often allow you to backup faster and more completely, especially when switching to a new device.

Backing up Android via Google (steps)

  1. Go to Settings on your Android device.
  2. Tap Google and then choose Backup. On some devices, such as Samsung, go to Accounts and Backup.
  3. Make sure Backup to Google Drive or Backup by Google One is enabled.
  4. Tap Back Up Now to start a new backup immediately.
  5. Check that important items such as contacts, app data, SMS and settings are selected.

Backing up photos and videos automatically

  1. Open the Google Photos app.
  2. Tap your profile in the upper right corner.
  3. Choose Backup and synchronization.
  4. Turn this feature on so that new photos and videos are saved automatically.

Samsung Smart Switch backup (optional)

If you use a Samsung device, you can also do a full backup via Smart Switch. This can be done locally on a computer and is convenient if you don’t want to use the cloud.

  1. Download Samsung Smart Switch on your computer.
  2. Connect your Samsung device with a cable.
  3. Open Smart Switch and choose Backup.
  4. Wait for all data to be saved.

Backup from Android phone to PC or Mac

If you prefer not to use the Google service, a local backup is also an option.

  1. Connect your smartphone to the PC via a USB cable.
  2. On your phone, turn on the file transfer option.
  3. Copy important files such as photos from the DCIM folder.

Backing up via Finder on Mac

If you use a modern Mac, iTunes is no longer used. Instead, you back up via Finder. This is faster, more stable and recommended by Apple.

  1. Connect your iPhone to your Mac.
  2. Open Finder.
  3. Select your iPhone in the sidebar.
  4. Click Create a backup copy.
