Screen burn-in on your Samsung smartphone can be very annoying, as part of a previously viewed screen remains on the glass. This makes it increasingly difficult to view things properly on your phone. Unfortunately, this cannot be fixed without replacing the screen, though there are some tips to reduce this.

In this blog, we discuss:

Play with the brightness

Try to keep the brightness nice and low whenever possible, as high brightness can cause more screen burn-in. So keeping this brightness low will prolong the life of the screen.

Use the screen timeout

To ensure that the screen is not on the same static screen for too long, it is also good to set the screen timeout. This way, the device turns the screen to black after a few minutes, and you minimize the chance of burn-in.

Avoid static images

Try to avoid static images, such as app icons or the same background, as much as possible. Otherwise, by displaying the same thing on the screen for a long time, there is a faster chance of burn-in.

Use the dark theme

Since high screen brightness causes your screen to burn in, it is also useful to set a dark theme. This lowers the brightness and makes the (often bright) white areas of the device darker more often. In addition, it is possible to enable the device’s night mode, then the colors are changed to somewhat warmer tones. This helps prevent screen burn-in, and helps you fall asleep a little more comfortably!

Why do AMOLED and OLED screens burn out?

Modern Samsung smartphones use AMOLED and OLED screens. These screens display colors with individual pixels that light themselves. This makes colors more beautiful and contrast better. The downside is that these pixels wear out when displaying the same images for long periods of time. Especially white or brightly colored elements such as navigation bars, TikTok buttons and status bars can remain visible over time as a result.

Does Always-on display affect screen burn-in?

Many Samsung devices have an Always-on display. This leaves a small portion of the screen visible at all times. Samsung mitigates this risk by slowly shifting the elements. Still, prolonged use can contribute to wear and tear on certain pixels. Turn off Always-on display when you want to preserve maximum screen life.

How does Samsung prevent screen burn-in?

Samsung uses several techniques to reduce screen burn-in, such as pixel shifting. This automatically shifts small elements on the screen a few pixels so that the same pixels are not constantly being used. It also automatically adjusts brightness and contrast to reduce wear and tear. Because of these features, screen burn-in on new Samsung smartphones is less likely than it used to be, but unfortunately complete prevention is not yet possible.
