5 tips to make sure your smartphone survives King’s Day.

Tomorrow is our favorite day of the year: King’s Day. The day when alcohol flows lavishly and nothing is too crazy. Happiness cannot be had on this day, until the day after often. Not to mention the hangover. You jolt awake with a far too dry mouth and gradually the panic attack begins to dawn on you. Where are my keys? Where is my wallet, where are my pants? Do I still have a bicycle? Little by little, you begin to gather everything together and come to the conclusion that your smartphone had as wild a King’s Day as you did: it is completely shattered. Now a broken screen is not so bad, as this is easy to repair. Slightly more annoying is a stolen phone, this happened to me 4 years ago, and believe me. Then that hangover is even worse.

1. NEVER put your phone in your back pocket.

Women especially prefer to put their phones in their back pockets because the front pockets are too narrow or cramped. However, there is a major drawback to it: A back pocket is the ultimate favorite for pickpockets; one gentle bump in a crowded crowd and your phone is gone without you even noticing. So always put your phone in an inside pocket, purse or front pants pocket.

2. Boating? Store your phone.

It won’t be the first time people have come by with a phone that has been submerged in water. Usually due to a fall in the toilet. But in the summer, when the sloops take to the water, we hear damn often that a phone was on the edge of a boat and so “splashed” into the water. So make sure your phone is properly stored because a fall into the ice or canals often has disastrous consequences for the phone. Let alone being able to get your phone after the fall.

3. Buy a case and protective cover

We say it daily: protecting is cheaper than curing, and yet most phone users walk around without a case. Protection ensures that in the event of a fall, your smartphone is protected from the impact and thus much less likely to break. Now I hear you thinking, I never drop it anyway. Trust us, you’re still walking straight now, but after those 15 beers on west street, you’re really not the sharpest.

4. Mind your pockets in a crowded crowd

Every day you see the videos popping up on Dumpert, pickpockets being picked up on Dam Square or the Rokin. These pickpockets turn it into a kind of sport, with King’s Day being the world championship. The center of Amsterdam is a perfect pickpocket spot on King’s Day: Busy crowds, expensive phones, lots of noise and everyone is knackered. So make sure that when walking through a crowded crowd, you pay close attention to your pockets. Check your pockets immediately when someone runs into you or when you get a little push.

5. Leave your phone at home or bring an old Nokia.

Okay, for those who can’t quite read the top steps right now and are hopeless for their phone, there is of course the option to just leave it be. Not a crazy idea actually you have after all 1. almost no coverage 2. gets rid of everyone anyway 3. Do have better things to do than facebooking and instagramming. Winning a fish race in the vondelpark, for example! So leave your phone at home, or bring one that can only make calls and play snake.
