Is my iPhone charging port broken or just dirty?
Because your iPhone is often in your pocket, dust can accumulate in the “hole” of the connector, or charging port. The dust therefore blocks the input, preventing the cable from making proper contact with the connector and preventing your iPhone from charging. At ThePhoneLab we can clean your charging port for free and professionally, just drop by one of our stores for this. If you want to try it yourself first, follow these steps:
- Take a thin toothpick or skewer and slightly blunt the tip.
- Gently insert the toothpick or satay stick into the dock connector. Note! Do this carefully and do not go too far into the connector or you may damage the connector.
- Now gently remove the dust with a twisting motion.
Restarting your iPhone
Even though it is not common, your battery may not charge properly due to a software error. So it does not have to be that your iPhone charging port is broken, but rather that it is your battery that is acting up. In this case it may help to restart your iPhone. This is best done with a forced startup, know how to do this? Then follow these steps:
- Press and hold the power and home buttons simultaneously
- Keep doing this until you see the Apple logo
- You can let go now, your iPhone will now get a forced boot.
Do you have an iPhone 8 (Plus), iPhone X or newer. Then the forced boot works as follows:
- Press the volume up button, release it and immediately after that press the volume down button
- Next, hold the button on the right side, the one that locks your screen. Release it only when the Apple logo appears.
Calibrating your battery
Calibrating your battery will restore your battery to its optimum performance. So before you, get your iPhone charging port replaced you can give this a try. Below we tell you step by step how to calibrate your iPhone battery.
- Pair your iPhone with an original charger to charge.
- Press the home and power buttons simultaneously.
- Keep pressing until the Apple logo appears.
- Your iPhone’s battery is now being calibrated.
Now make sure you let the battery charge fully to 100%. You will notice that the last percent to 100% is slower than before. This is the balancing process of calibration. The cells are discharged and suffered until they reach the correct final voltage. Your battery is now calibrated and will charge better next time and even last longer.
Use a wireless charger
You can bypass charging with a charging cable by buying a wireless charger. You may ask, couldn’t I just as well replace my iPhone charging port? We leave that choice entirely up to you. Please note; wireless charging is only possible with the iPhone 8 (Plus), iPhone X or newer. Place your device on the charging pad and your battery will slowly recharge.
