Is my iPhone charging port broken or just dirty?
Because your iPhone is often in your pocket, dust can accumulate in the “hole” of the connector, or charging port. The dust therefore blocks the input, preventing the cable from making proper contact with the connector and preventing your iPhone from charging. At ThePhoneLab we can clean your charging port for free and professionally, just drop by one of our stores for this. If you want to try it yourself first, follow these steps:
- Take a thin toothpick or skewer and slightly blunt the tip.
- Gently insert the toothpick or satay stick into the dock connector. Note! Do this carefully and do not go too far into the connector or you may damage the connector.
- Now gently remove the dust with a twisting motion.
Restarting your iPhone
Even though it is not common, your battery may not charge properly due to a software error. So it does not have to be that your iPhone charging port is broken, but rather that it is your battery that is acting up. In this case, restarting your iPhone may help. This is best done with a forced startup, know how to do this? Then follow these steps:
- Press and hold the power and home buttons simultaneously
- Keep doing this until you see the Apple logo
- You can let go now, your iPhone will now get a forced boot.
Do you have an iPhone 8 (Plus), iPhone X or newer. Then the forced boot works as follows:
- Press the volume up button, release it and immediately after that press the volume down button
- Next, hold the button on the right side, the one that locks your screen. Release it only when the Apple logo appears.
Calibrating your battery
Calibrating your battery can help with an incorrect battery display or irregular charging. So before you, get your iPhone charging port replaced you can give this a try. Below we tell you step by step how to calibrate your iPhone battery.
- Use your iPhone until the battery runs low.
- Then charge your iPhone to 100% in one charge with an original or certified charger.
- After that, leave your iPhone on the charger for another 60 minutes.
Be sure to let the battery charge fully to 100%. This can help improve the battery indication.
Use a wireless charger
You can bypass charging with a charging cable by buying a wireless charger. You may ask, couldn’t I just as well replace my iPhone charging port? We leave that choice entirely up to you. Please note; wireless charging is only possible with the iPhone 8 (Plus), iPhone X or newer. Place your device on the charging pad and your battery will slowly recharge.
iPhone charging port replacement
Have you tried all the above options and come to the conclusion that your iPhone charging port is broken? Then it’s most likely time for an iPhone connector repair. This part of your iPhone, also called dock connector can unfortunately break. So this is the culprit that causes your iPhone to stop charging. Replacing your dock connector is then the only solution in this case. How your dock connector broke you can often fill in for yourself. Common causes may include, using a charger that is not officially from Apple. It is also possible that due to improper use of your charger, which does come from Apple, that the dock connector is bent. Modern causes of charging problems in iPhones
Newer iPhones may also have charging problems not directly related to the charging port. For example:
- USB-C cables and chargers: Apple has been using USB-C since the iPhone 15. Not every cable supports fast charging or data. Cheap cables can cause charging problems.
- Software and updates: after an iOS update, temporarily faster battery consumption or slower charging may occur due to background processes.
- Moisture or dirt detection: modern iPhones alert if there is moisture in the charging port. This can block charging to prevent damage.
- Worn-out battery: an old battery may delay or interrupt charging even if the charging port is working properly.
Having doubts? Have your device professionally checked. That way you avoid unnecessary repairs and know for sure what’s wrong.
