Slow iPhone? A new battery works wonders

It seems to have ended with a hiss, but just a few months ago Apple was the center of attention. And not in a positive way. For years, the American tech giant deliberately made iPhones slower through software updates. Critics think Apple did that to shorten the lifespan of iPhones so people would buy a new one sooner.

Apple itself came out with an
letter of apology
in which it assured that the delay updates were in the best interests of its customers. As batteries age, the devices’ performance deteriorates, and the update would prevent iPhones from simply shutting down during heavy processor loads.

To measure is to know

Whatever the truth, Apple did have a point. The app Geekbench not only discovered Apple’s nefarious scheme, their app also shows that a bad iPhone battery can indeed affect your phone’s speed. The reason is that iOS sets an iPhone’s processor to a lower clock speed (which can be compared to the speed of a car), which makes apps, for example, start up slower.

A slow phone is a reason for many people to switch to a newer model. But such a new device costs a lot of your hard-earned money and doesn’t exactly contribute to to a better environment. And that while a new battery may very well be the solution to the problem.

You can run straight to the store for a new battery, but to find out for sure if the battery is the cause of your delayed iPhone, there are a few reliable DIY tests. The Geekbench app lets you measure the CPU of your device. With this you test the speed. You get a score that you can compare to devices of other people, but you don’t get to see if that’s good.

Therefore, compare the results with the table below. There are two scores: Single-Core and Multi-Core. If your scores are much lower, then your phone is indeed slower than it should be.

Next, in the same app, test the battery. If you see in the middle results list that the battery percentage decreases much too quickly, then you can assume that your battery is no longer good.

Are both your battery score and CPU score not good? Then it is very likely that your battery is slowing down your iPhone.

Geekbench costs $1.09 in the App Store. If you want to use the app to test your battery, you need to run a test on the iPhone for several hours. So for good results, it is not usable for a while.
