Recently, one of our specialists tested the OnePlus 8 Pro and wrote an extensive user experience about it. Now, of course, the OnePlus 8 could not be left out and we had one of our specialists write a review about this device as well.

OnePlus 8 review

My name is Berk de Rooij and I am a specialist at ThePhoneLab. Thanks to our partnership with OnePlus – of which we are an authorized service point – I had the opportunity to test drive the new OnePlus 8. I myself am a big fan of OnePlus and have had the OnePlus 5T for several years now. So I was very curious to see what kind of news OnePlus would come up with this year.

The experience with the OnePlus 8

When I got the device, I immediately transferred all my data to the OnePlus 8, this was very easy thanks to OnePlus Switch. This is an app from OnePlus itself that makes it very easy to transfer data from a OnePlus, as well as from other devices.

The screen

The first thing I noticed was the device’s screen. This year, OnePlus went straight to a 90Hz screen with the standard model. You can feel the difference between a normal 60Hz screen and a 90Hz screen right away. Especially when scrolling through pictures or emails. Now that I am used to 90Hz it seems difficult to go back to 60Hz. Other than that, the PPI(pixels per inch) has not changed from the OnePlus 7, but the screen is just a bit larger, at 6.55 inches. With its Fluid AMOLED screen with a resolution of 2400 x 1080, the OnePlus 8 gives a very nice picture with accurate colors and good contrast.

One problem with using the device is that the OnePlus 8’s screen is very large, making it very difficult to operate properly with one hand. The OnePlus 8 Pro has very curved edges that often cause unwanted touches. The edges of the OnePlus 8 are just a bit less curved so I had virtually no such problem.

The battery

In addition, the device lasts well over a day, sometimes even two! With a 4300mAh battery, you really don’t have to worry about the OnePlus 8’s battery life. In the time I have been using the device, I have never run out of battery. It’s a shame, though, that you can’t charge the OnePlus 8 wirelessly. But because OnePlus’s WarpCharge is so fast, it actually didn’t bother me. If you charge the phone for half an hour you already have enough battery percentage to get through the whole day. Should you want to get even more out of your battery, you can choose to lower the screen refresh rate in the settings. This gives you another boost in battery life.

In-Display fingerprint scanner

The OnePlus 8’s in-display fingerprint scanner works very well and is super fast, one of the fastest if you compare it to other recent models. Unlocking with facial recognition also works flawlessly. I usually use the face recognition feature, and I haven’t had a single problem with it.

The camera

Lastly, the OnePlus 8 camera can take very nice photos during the day. The device has a nice selection of different cameras. It has a wide-angle lens allowing a lot to be photographed at once, and a macro mode for taking close-ups. However, you see the weaker side of the camera when it begins to dim. Photos you take in the evening become significantly blurrier and have less detail.

Conclusion

In the end, it is a very nice device, and especially for the price it sells for (starting at €699). The device feels very good and is blazingly fast. Future software updates will fix most of the problems the device has. Do you still need advice on whether this is the phone for you? Feel free to stop by one of our stores for customized advice.
